THE WEEKLY KNIGHT
===================
(For August 7, 1993)
Although the 1993 World Championship match(es) won't begin
for about another month, the Interzonal tournament which will
lead to the selection of a challenger to the 1996 FIDE world
title has recently ended in Biel, Switzerland.
Out of the 74 or so players who participated at Biel, the top
ten finishers will advance and be seeded into Candidates'
Matches: Boris Gelfand from Belarus; 1993 Dutch Champion, 37
year old Paul van der Sterren; Russian/German GM Alexander
Khalifman; American Gata Kamsky; Michael Adams from England;
the Russian GM of many homes at present, Leonid Yudasin;
Valery Salov, formerly of Russia now residing in Linares,
Spain; the Frenchman, Joel Lautier; 18 year old Vladimir
Kramnik and perhaps the pre-tourney favorite, Viswanathan
Anand. Gelfand took clear first with a 9-4 record; the rest
tied at 8.5-4.5. All are Grandmasters.
According to a report that appeared on the USA TODAY SPORTS
CENTER electronic service, based on a conversation between
journalist Hanon Russell and Dutch GM Hans Ree, the
Candidates' Match pairings will be as follows:
M.Adams--B.Gelfand
V.Kramnik--L.Yudasin
V.Salov--A.Khalifman
G.Kamsky--P.van der Sterren
J.Lautier--*
V.Anand--A.Yusupov
*--Lautier will play the loser of the upcoming Karpov-Timman FIDE
World Championship match.
A new twist will be brought into play for the final stage of the matches:
the three remaining winners will be joined by the current FIDE World
Champion, which could lead to the unusual situation where the present title
holder is not even a participant in the subsequent championship match!
The initial round of the matches is scheduled for February of 1994.
Results of other US players at Biel were as follows: Patrick Wolff, Yasser
Seirawan and Boris Gulko finished at 7-6, tied for 22nd place; Ilya
Gurevich, 6.5-6.5; Alex Sherzer, 5.5-7.5 and Dmitry Gurevich, 5-8.
Gelfand played impressively to beat Anand in the eighth round.
